Welcome to the Bayou Cane Fire Protection District’s EMS web page. It is our hope that the information contained on this page will be helpful to you and perhaps give you some insight into the operation of the EMS Division.

The mission of the Bayou Cane Fire Protection District’s Emergency Medical Service is to deliver expedient, quality, pre-hospital emergency medical care to the citizens and guests of our District.

We currently have 29 nationally certified First Responders, 23 nationally certified EMT’s, and 2 nationally certified Paramedics on staff with 1 in Paramedic school. It is our vision to have 95% trained to the EMT-B level and more trained to the Paramedic level in the near future. Our units currently respond 24 hours a day, every day to serve the Bayou Cane Fire Protection District. The First Responders, EMTs and Paramedics of the Bayou Cane Fire Protection District are highly trained and do a great job administering patient care. All of our responders are certified firefighters. Currently, we are privileged to deliver care at the BLS level (basic life support) and desire to be at the ALS (advanced life support) Non-Transport level in the not so distant future. This would allow us to initiate life saving intervention prior to the Ambulance arriving on scene. Some examples of these functions would be to start I.V.’s, intubate the patient, and administer intravenous medications. Many times we arrive well before the Ambulance and this advanced care is necessary for a better patient outcome. We are currently conducting a cost vs benefit analysis of this subject. We follow the American Heart Association guidelines for Cardiac Resuscitation and update our personnel as new guidelines are published

Our medical direction is provided by Dr.Thomas Falterman M.D. He plays an active role in Education, Protocol development and Continuing Quality Improvement. Our medical protocols parallel those of our local Ambulance service, so the transfer of care is seamless and consistent.

Since mid 2008, our responders here at Bayou Cane have been credited with saving 3 lives due to our quick response capabilities and medical training. The equipment we carry plays a vital role in our ability to change patient outcomes. It is important to note that we are but one of the first links in the lifesaving chain. The other responders and hospital staff have all played a vital role in these successes. We here at Bayou Cane are proud of everyone who contributed to these successful outcomes. Saving lives is the very essence of why our service exists and we feel it is a privilege to serve our fellow citizens.
